TMUA vs MAT vs STEP: Which Maths Admissions Test Do You Need?
TMUA, MAT and STEP test different things for different courses. Here is who needs each, how the formats and difficulty compare, and a preparation plan for all three.
If you are applying for a mathematics-heavy degree at a selective UK university, you will probably meet at least one admissions test. They are not interchangeable: TMUA, MAT and STEP differ in format, difficulty, timing and — most importantly — in which universities and courses require them.
Getting the right one, and preparing properly, matters far more than most applicants realise, because these tests frequently carry more weight than predicted grades.

TMUA
What it is. Two 75-minute papers of multiple-choice questions. Paper 1 tests mathematical applications — solving problems with AS-level content. Paper 2 tests mathematical reasoning: logic, proof, implication, necessary and sufficient conditions, and identifying flawed arguments.
Who needs it. A growing group of universities use TMUA for Economics, Computer Science, Mathematics and related courses. At several, a good TMUA score results in a reduced grade offer, which makes it well worth sitting even where it is optional.
What is distinctive. Paper 2 is unlike anything in A-Level Maths. It asks about the logical structure of arguments: which statement follows from which, what a counter-example would look like, whether a condition is necessary or sufficient. Students who prepare only by doing hard algebra problems are consistently caught out by it.
Preparation. Learn the logic vocabulary properly — implication, converse, contrapositive, necessary, sufficient, if and only if — then practise the reasoning paper as its own discipline. For Paper 1, the content is AS-level, so the challenge is speed and multi-step problem-solving rather than unfamiliar mathematics. Since it is multiple choice with no method marks, accuracy and time management are everything: there is no partial credit.
MAT
What it is. A 2.5-hour paper. The first section is multiple choice covering a range of topics; the remaining questions are long-form, structured problems where you must show full reasoning. Which long questions you attempt depends on your course.
Who needs it. Oxford Mathematics, Computer Science and joint courses; Imperial Mathematics; and Warwick for some applicants.
What is distinctive. The syllabus is deliberately limited — roughly AS-level content, with no Further Maths required. The difficulty comes entirely from depth: taking familiar tools and applying them in unfamiliar, multi-stage ways. A typical MAT question uses only quadratics and graph transformations but requires four non-obvious steps to get anywhere.
Preparation. Past papers are the whole preparation, and they go back many years with published solutions. Do them slowly at first, with no time limit, sitting with a question for twenty or thirty minutes before looking at a solution. That struggle is the training — MAT rewards the ability to keep going on a problem where the route is not visible, which is precisely the skill A-Level does not develop.
For the long questions, write up your reasoning fully. Marks are for the argument, not just the answer, and clarity of explanation matters.
STEP
What it is. Long-form papers of three hours, in which you choose a small number of questions (typically six) to attempt in full. Questions are extended, multi-part, and proof-heavy.
Who needs it. Cambridge Mathematics almost universally, plus Warwick and Imperial for certain offers. Usually sat in June, after A-Levels, and typically written into the conditional offer (for example, AAA plus grade 1 in STEP 2 and STEP 3).
What is distinctive. STEP demands full A-Level and substantial Further Maths content, sustained concentration on a single problem for 30–45 minutes, and rigorous written argument. It is closer to undergraduate mathematics than to A-Level.
Preparation. Start early — ideally the spring of Year 12, and seriously from the autumn of Year 13. Quality over quantity: attempting one STEP question properly, then reading the solution, then rewriting your own version cleanly, is worth more than skimming five. Because you only attempt six questions in the exam, learning to choose well is a skill in itself: spend the first ten minutes reading and selecting, and never abandon a question halfway through unless it is truly dead.
How they differ in what they reward
- TMUA rewards speed, precision and logical clarity across many short problems.
- MAT rewards depth of insight with limited tools, and the persistence to find a non-obvious route.
- STEP rewards sustained rigorous argument and genuine command of the full A-Level and Further Maths content.
A student can be excellent at one and mediocre at another, which is worth knowing when choosing between courses that require different tests.
A shared preparation foundation
Whichever test you face, three things underpin all of them:
1. Absolute fluency in AS-level Pure. Every one of these tests assumes you can manipulate quadratics, logs, trigonometric identities, sequences and graph transformations without thinking. If any of that is slow, fix it before touching test papers — use the topic questions under resources and the A-Level textbook library.
2. Comfort with sitting on a hard problem. A-Level trains you to answer questions in two minutes. Admissions tests require twenty. Practise deliberately: set a hard problem, and do not look at the solution for at least twenty-five minutes, however uncomfortable that is.
3. Written mathematical argument. For MAT and STEP especially, marks come from a clear chain of reasoning. Write in full sentences where needed, justify each step, and state what you are proving. Read published solutions as much for their style as their content.
A realistic timeline
- Year 12, spring/summer: secure AS content completely. Begin looking at MAT or TMUA past questions casually; start STEP foundation material if you are aiming for Cambridge.
- Summer between Year 12 and 13: the highest-value block. Two or three hours a week on test-style problems, untimed.
- September–October of Year 13: intensive TMUA/MAT preparation, moving to timed conditions in the final three weeks.
- November onwards (STEP candidates): regular STEP practice alongside A-Level work, roughly one question every day or two.
- May–June: STEP intensive after A-Level papers finish, using timed full papers.

Worked walk-through: a TMUA-style reasoning question
Take a typical Paper 2 style claim: "If a quadratic has no real roots, then its discriminant is negative." A student trained only on algebra will nod and move on. A TMUA-ready student checks it properly: is this statement itself the definition (yes — no real roots is equivalent to a negative discriminant, so it is both necessary and sufficient), and then asks what the converse and contrapositive would say, and whether each is also true. That habit — restating a claim in its converse and contrapositive form before answering — is exactly what Paper 2 rewards, and it takes minutes to build into a routine once you know to do it.
For a MAT-style long question, the walk-through habit is different: write down everything you are given, sketch the situation if it is remotely geometric, then ask "what tool turns this picture into an equation?" before touching algebra. Half of MAT's difficulty disappears once you stop trying to solve the question in your head and start extracting structure onto paper first.
For STEP, the walk-through is about scope: read all the parts of a question before starting part (i), because STEP questions are built so that early parts are deliberately engineered to feed the later ones. Missing that structure means redoing work you already did once.
Common mistakes candidates make
- Treating TMUA Paper 1 like a normal exam. There are no method marks, so a small slip that would cost one mark on a written paper costs the whole mark here. Check the final answer against the answer options — if none match, you have made an error, not found a "trick" answer.
- Skipping past papers for MAT because they feel too old. MAT questions are deliberately timeless; a question from a decade ago is exactly as relevant as one from last year. Skipping older papers halves your practice pool for no benefit.
- Running out of time by attempting STEP questions in numerical order. STEP does not present its six best questions for you first. Spend the opening minutes scanning all the questions and picking your six deliberately.
- Neglecting to write full justification on MAT and STEP long questions. A correct final answer with no argument can score close to zero on a proof-style question. Marks are for the chain of reasoning, not just for arriving somewhere.
- Over-preparing for the admissions test at the expense of A-Level content. A brilliant TMUA score cannot rescue an offer if the grade condition is missed.
- Assuming Further Maths content will not appear on STEP. It will, extensively, and skipping it because "it's not compulsory for entry" leaves serious marks unclaimed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sit more than one of these tests? Yes, and many applicants to Mathematics do — TMUA or MAT in the fom of the application, then STEP the following summer if their offer requires it. The tests do not clash in the way A-Level papers can, since TMUA and MAT are sat months before STEP.
Does a poor TMUA or MAT score rule me out? Universities weigh these tests alongside your personal statement, predicted grades and reference, not in isolation. A weak score makes an offer less likely at the most competitive courses but is rarely the sole reason for rejection — check your specific course's published approach.
How many past papers should I do for MAT? Most successful applicants work through the majority of the available archive, but slowly and with full write-ups rather than racing through as many as possible. Depth of practice beats volume here.
Is calculator use allowed in any of these? No. All three are non-calculator, which is worth building into your practice from day one so that arithmetic speed is not a separate problem on the day.
What if my school does not offer STEP preparation? This is common, and self-directed preparation using published past papers and solutions is entirely viable — many successful Cambridge applicants prepare largely independently, supplemented with online resources or a tutor for the trickiest questions.
