Near misses are often accepted. Have your firm, insurance and Clearing options written down before results morning.

How university offers are matched

A grades offer such as A*AA is matched against your three best full A-Levels, highest to highest. Subject conditions are handled first: if the offer says "A*AA including A* in Maths", your Maths grade must be A* even if another subject is stronger. AS-Levels and the EPQ do not count toward a grades offer, but they do add UCAS Tariff points, which matters when the offer is stated in points instead.

Missing by one grade

A one-grade near miss is the most common outcome and is frequently accepted, particularly when the course is not oversubscribed. If maths is the subject holding you back, work through A-Level past papers with worked solutions and mark yourself against real boundaries.

Frequently asked questions

What does an A*AA offer actually mean?

It means your three best A-Level grades must be at least A*, A and A. The grades are matched highest to highest, so an A*, A and A meets it, but A, A, A does not unless the university confirms flexibility.

What happens if I miss my offer by one grade?

Many universities still accept near-miss applicants, especially if you narrowly missed and the course is not oversubscribed. You are held in 'decision pending' on results day while the university decides, and you can also use Clearing as a backup.

Do AS-Levels and the EPQ count toward a grades offer?

Usually not for a grades offer such as AAB — that refers to full A-Levels only. They do count toward UCAS Tariff points offers, and some universities will drop an offer by one grade for an A in the EPQ.
