Resitting GCSE Maths in November: A Complete Guide to Passing
Everything post-16 students need for the November GCSE Maths resit — entry rules, tier choice, the ten topics that carry the pass, and an eight-week plan built around past papers.
If you finished Year 11 without a grade 4 in maths, you are in a very large group. Every autumn, tens of thousands of students sit the November GCSE Maths resit, and the pass rate is markedly lower than in the summer series — not because the paper is harder, but because most candidates repeat the same preparation that did not work the first time.
This guide is about doing it differently.
The basics
- When: the November series, typically over two or three weeks in early-to-mid November, with three papers on separate days.
- Who: anyone can resit, but students aged 16–18 in publicly funded education who did not achieve a grade 4 are normally required to continue studying maths, and usually to resit.
- Entry: through your college or sixth form if you are enrolled, or as a private candidate through an exam centre if not. Private entries have earlier deadlines — typically early October — so check immediately rather than assuming.
- Format: identical to the summer — three papers, 90 minutes each, 80 marks each, one non-calculator and two calculator.
- Result: grades are usually issued in January. The resit grade stands alongside, not instead of, your previous one; you keep the best.
Why resits fail, and how to avoid it
Three reasons dominate.
1. Repeating passive revision. Re-reading notes, watching videos and completing worksheets you can already do produces the feeling of preparation without the substance. If your revision does not involve marking your own work against an official mark scheme, it is not revision.
2. Not knowing the actual gap. Most resit candidates could not tell you which topics cost them the pass, because they never analysed the paper. Without that, revision is a guess.
3. Wrong tier. A student who scored a low grade 3 on Higher — say 40 marks out of 240 — is being asked to answer questions largely written for grades 6 to 9. On Foundation, that same student faces a paper where every question is within reach, and the grade 4 boundary, while a higher percentage, is far more achievable in practice.
Tier choice: get this right first
On Higher tier, the grade 4 boundary is low — often around 20–25% of the marks. On Foundation it is high — often around 55–65%. The trade-off is that Foundation caps you at a grade 5, which for a resit candidate targeting a pass is usually irrelevant.
The evidence-based test: sit one full Foundation paper and one full Higher paper, timed, from a recent series on the past papers hub. Mark both against the official mark schemes and compare against the published boundaries.
- If your Foundation score is comfortably in the grade 4 region and Higher is not, take Foundation.
- If you were close to a 4 on Higher and want a 5 for a specific course requirement, Higher may be worth it — but only if you have the time to cover the Higher-only content.
- If both scores are low, Foundation, without question. Confidence across a whole paper matters, and three papers of near-total incomprehension is corrosive.

The ten topics that carry a pass
At grade 4 level, the marks are concentrated. These ten areas make up the large majority of accessible marks on either tier:
- Four operations and negative numbers, including long multiplication and division without a calculator
- Fractions, decimals and percentages — converting between them, and all four operations with fractions
- Percentage change, including increase, decrease, and finding a percentage of an amount
- Ratio and proportion, including sharing in a ratio and recipe scaling
- Basic algebra — expanding brackets, collecting terms, solving linear equations, substitution into formulae
- Sequences — term-to-term and nth term for linear sequences
- Angles — on a line, around a point, in triangles, parallel lines, and polygons
- Area, perimeter and volume of rectangles, triangles, circles, and prisms
- Averages and data — mean, median, mode, range, reading tables and charts
- Basic probability — single events, sample spaces, and simple tree diagrams
If you can do all ten reliably and accurately, you will pass on Foundation and be at or above the boundary on Higher. Everything else is a bonus. Resist the temptation to spend your time on the topics you found most interesting or most intimidating — spend it here.
The eight-week plan
Week 1 — Diagnose. One full past paper, timed, marked against the official mark scheme. Split lost marks into "nearly had it" and "no idea". List the topics in the second pile and cross-reference against the ten above; that intersection is your syllabus.
Weeks 2–3 — Number. Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio. Forty to sixty short questions per week, from real papers rather than made-up worksheets — use the topic-tagged questions under resources. Include a daily ten-minute non-calculator arithmetic drill; Paper 1 is won or lost here.
Weeks 4–5 — Algebra and shape. Expanding, solving, substituting, sequences, angles, area and volume. Same volume, same approach.
Week 6 — Data and probability. Averages from tables, reading graphs, probability trees. This strand is the fastest to improve because the question shapes repeat almost exactly.
Week 7 — Full papers. Two full papers, timed, each fully marked and logged. Redo every question you lost marks on from scratch within two days.
Week 8 — Consolidate. No new topics. Redo the questions you have got wrong across the whole eight weeks. One final timed paper mid-week. Rest the day before.
Three to five hours a week is enough if the hours are spent this way. Ten hours of re-reading notes is not.
The free marks you are probably giving away
Audit every marked paper against this list:
- Rounding too early, or ignoring "give your answer to 2 decimal places"
- Missing units, or the wrong units after a conversion
- Leaving a question blank instead of writing the first correct line — method marks are often awarded separately from the answer
- Answering a different question from the one asked
- Not showing working on "show that" questions, where the answer is printed and the marks are entirely for the working
- Calculator in the wrong mode
Ten to fifteen marks per paper is typical here, and at the grade 4 boundary that is often the entire difference.
Exam-day tactics
- Work through the paper in order; it is roughly in difficulty order, so the early questions are where your grade lives. Do not skip ahead to something that "looks like a topic I revised".
- Two-minute rule: no progress in two minutes, flag it, move on, come back.
- Never leave a blank. Write something mathematical and relevant.
- Save five minutes at the end for checking rounding, units and blanks — not for one last attempt at the hardest question.
- Bring your own calculator, one you have used all term, plus spare batteries.
If you are studying alone
Private candidates and students on courses with little timetabled maths face the biggest challenge: nobody is checking the work. Two things substitute effectively.
First, mark schemes. Marking your own work honestly against the official scheme is the closest thing to having a teacher, and it teaches you what examiners actually pay for. A worked example: turning a marked paper into a plan
Say a diagnostic paper comes back with 58/240 on Higher, or a similar low score on Foundation. Rather than reacting to the overall number, break it down:
- List every question where marks were lost, and split each into "no idea", "knew the method but slipped", or "ran out of time".
- Cross-reference the "no idea" list against the ten priority topics above. Anything outside that list is lower priority for a resit.
- Anything inside the list — say, ratio and percentage change both came up as "no idea" — becomes the first week's focus, ahead of anything you find more interesting.
- Anything marked "knew the method but slipped" goes straight into a short daily accuracy drill rather than a full topic re-teach, since the content is not the problem.
This is the same exercise week 1 of the eight-week plan asks for, but doing it explicitly on paper, rather than trusting a general impression of "I'm bad at algebra", is what makes the following weeks efficient rather than a repeat of GCSE by default.
Common mistakes resit students make
- Revising the whole specification evenly. A resit is not a first attempt; time is short and marks are concentrated in the ten priority topics. Spreading effort evenly across everything, including rarely examined content, wastes hours that are better spent drilling the areas that actually carry the pass.
- Not checking the tier decision again. Some students resit on whichever tier they sat in the summer without questioning it, even when a fresh timed paper would show the other tier is now the better fit.
- Studying without marking against a real scheme. Working through questions and checking only the final answer misses method marks, presentation requirements, and the specific way marks are actually awarded — the same discipline problem that affects first-time candidates.
- Leaving entry to the last minute. Private candidate deadlines in particular fall earlier than most students expect, often in early October for a November sitting, and missing that window removes the option entirely for that series.
- Giving up after one resit. A November resit that does not succeed is not the end of the road; the same diagnostic approach can be repeated for a further sitting, and a small number of specific gaps is usually easier to close the second time once they have been correctly identified.
Frequently asked questions
Can I resit more than once? Yes. GCSE Maths can be resat in subsequent November or summer series, and colleges generally support continued resits for students who have not yet achieved a grade 4, since it remains a requirement to keep working towards it.
Will a November resit grade replace my summer grade if it's lower? No. You keep your best grade across all sittings; a lower resit result does not overwrite a higher one already achieved.
How is the November resit different from the summer paper? The format, timing and specification coverage are the same. The main practical differences are compressed preparation time and a smaller, more self-directed candidate pool, particularly for private candidates and those balancing resit study with a new college course.
Is it worth switching tier for a resit even if I sat Higher in the summer? It can be, particularly if the summer result was well below the grade 4 boundary on Higher. A single fresh timed Foundation paper, marked properly, is enough to check whether it would put you in a stronger position for a pass.
What if my college doesn't offer much timetabled support for resits? Structure the eight-week plan yourself using the priority topic list and past papers with mark schemes, and treat the fixed weekly sessions as non-negotiable appointments. The November resit is not a re-run of Year 11. It is a shorter, narrower, much more targeted task: ten topics, done accurately, under time. Students who approach it that way pass at a far higher rate than those who try to "revise GCSE Maths" all over again.
