How to Revise GCSE Maths in a Week: An Emergency Plan
Left GCSE maths revision late? Here is a realistic seven-day triage plan covering the highest-frequency topics, method marks and what to abandon.
If you are reading this with a week or less before your GCSE maths exam, stop scrolling for the perfect revision timetable and start triaging. A week is not enough time to "cover the whole specification properly," and pretending otherwise wastes hours you don't have. It is enough time to raise your grade meaningfully if you spend it on the right things, in the right order, with a ruthless attitude to what you skip.

The triage mindset
Every GCSE maths paper is built from a fairly predictable set of topic families, weighted roughly by how much of the specification they occupy. Some topics appear in some form on almost every paper series; others are rarer, harder to revise quickly, or worth relatively few marks compared with the time it takes to master them. With a week left, your job is to:
- Identify the topics that appear most often and are quick to relearn.
- Identify the topics where you can pick up "method marks" even if you don't reach the final answer.
- Deliberately abandon a small number of low-frequency, high-effort topics.
- Practise exam technique, not just content, because technique is often worth more than an extra topic in the final week.
This sounds harsh, but examiners give a large proportion of marks for method, not just correct final answers. Learning to show clear, labelled working is one of the highest-value things you can do in a week, because it works across nearly every question type.
Step 1: identify the high-frequency topics
Across GCSE maths papers (Foundation and Higher), certain topics turn up in almost every series because they are core numeracy and algebra skills that examiners can test in many different contexts. These typically include:
- Percentages (including reverse percentages and compound interest)
- Ratio and proportion
- Fractions, decimals and standard form
- Solving and rearranging equations, including simultaneous equations
- Expanding and factorising, including quadratics
- Angles, including parallel lines and polygons
- Pythagoras' theorem and trigonometry (SOHCAHTOA)
- Area, perimeter and volume of common 2D and 3D shapes
- Sequences (linear and quadratic)
- Averages and basic probability
If you only have a week, these topics deserve the majority of your time. Pulling old past papers and scanning the topics tested in the last several series is a quick way to confirm this pattern for your specific exam board and tier.
Step 2: spot the "method mark" topics
Some topics are worth targeting even if you can't guarantee a fully correct answer, because the mark scheme awards marks for correct method, substitution or partial working. Examples include:
- Quadratic formula questions, where writing the correct substitution earns marks even with an arithmetic slip later
- Simultaneous equations, where correctly eliminating one variable is credited
- Trigonometry and Pythagoras, where a correctly labelled diagram and correct formula choice often score
- Compound measures (speed, density, pressure), where setting up the right formula and units is creditworthy
Practise writing out method clearly even under time pressure. A messy but correct method line is worth more than a blank space or an unexplained final answer.
Step 3: decide what to abandon
This is uncomfortable but necessary. With a week left, you cannot properly learn everything, and trying to will leave you shallow across the board. Candidates for deliberate deprioritisation include:
- Topics you have never understood despite multiple attempts in class (for example, certain circle theorem proofs, or vector proof questions on Higher tier)
- Very low-frequency content specific to a small number of marks
- Content that depends heavily on topics you haven't secured yet (don't start algebraic proof if you can't factorise confidently)
Abandoning a topic doesn't mean guaranteed zero marks; multiple-choice-style working and sensible estimation can still pick up marks. But don't spend precious hours on your very weakest, rarest topics when stronger, more common ones are still shaky.
The seven-day schedule
Adjust this to your own timetable, but the shape should stay similar: build up core numeracy and algebra early in the week, layer geometry and statistics in the middle, and spend the final two days almost entirely on timed past papers.
Day 1: Number and percentages
Cover fractions, decimals, percentages (including reverse percentage and compound interest), standard form, and rounding/estimation. Do a short topic-based question set for each, marking immediately and correcting mistakes before moving on.
Day 2: Algebra basics
Expanding brackets, factorising (including quadratics), solving linear and quadratic equations, rearranging formulae, and simultaneous equations. Algebra underpins a huge share of the paper, so this day matters more than any other single day.
Day 3: Ratio, proportion and sequences
Ratio problems, direct and inverse proportion, and linear/quadratic sequences. These questions are formulaic once you know the method, so they respond well to focused practice.
Day 4: Geometry and trigonometry
Angle facts, area and volume formulae, Pythagoras and trigonometry, and (if Higher tier) the sine and cosine rules. Keep a formula sheet next to you and drill the "which formula do I need" decision rather than memorising working for individual questions.
Day 5: Statistics and probability

Day 6: Full past paper, timed
Sit a complete past paper under exam conditions, ideally from past papers, then mark it properly using the official mark scheme. Do not skip the marking step: this is where you learn exactly which topics still need attention and how examiners award method marks.
Day 7: Targeted repair and calculator checks
Use the results from Day 6 to spend the morning re-drilling your two or three weakest areas. Exam-day technique that costs nothing to learn
A few habits improve your mark total regardless of how much content you've covered:
- Always show working, even for questions you think you can do in your head.

- Check units and significant figures before moving on.
- Don't get stuck: if a question isn't working after a couple of minutes, move on and come back if time allows.
- Use your calculator's exact-value modes where relevant instead of rounding early, since early rounding is one of the most common ways marks are lost.
What a week can realistically achieve
Be honest with yourself about what this plan can and cannot do. A focused week can meaningfully lift a borderline grade by tightening technique, refreshing high-frequency content and improving exam discipline. It is much less likely to take you from a very weak foundation to a top grade, because genuine fluency in algebra and geometry is built over months, not days. If you're in that position, it is still worth doing this plan properly, because every extra secured mark counts, but keep expectations realistic and prioritise not panicking on the day.

Common last-minute mistakes to avoid
Even well-prepared students lose marks in the final week through avoidable errors rather than genuine gaps in knowledge. Watch out for these:
- Rounding too early. If a question has several steps, keep exact values or extra decimal places until the final answer, then round as instructed. Rounding intermediate values is one of the most common ways marks are lost in multi-step problems.
- Ignoring units. Always check whether an answer needs units, and whether you need to convert between units (for example, centimetres to metres, or minutes to hours) partway through a question.
- Misreading the tier or calculator instructions. Some questions are calculator-only or non-calculator; check which paper you are sitting and don't waste time trying to use a method that isn't appropriate.
- Not checking the number of marks against your working. A two-mark question rarely needs half a page of algebra; a five-mark question almost never has a one-line answer. Use the mark allocation as a guide to how much work is expected.
- Leaving questions blank. Even a partially correct method, a sensible diagram, or an estimate can pick up a mark. Never leave a question completely blank if you have any relevant idea at all.
Balancing revision with rest
It's tempting, with only days left, to revise for as many hours as possible without breaks. This is usually counterproductive. Retention drops sharply after roughly 45 to 60 minutes of focused work, and tired, stressed revision in the evening before an exam often does more harm than good. A more effective structure is:
- Focused sessions of 45–60 minutes, with a five to ten minute break between them.
- A clear stopping point each evening, ideally at least an hour before bed, so your mind can wind down.
- A short, light review on the morning of the exam itself — formulae, common error checklists, and calculator settings — rather than trying to learn new content.
Sleep in the final two nights before the exam matters more for performance than an extra hour of last-minute cramming. If you have to choose between an additional hour of revision and getting to bed on time, choose sleep.
A note on Foundation versus Higher tier
If you are close to the tier boundary, or unsure which tier you are entered for, check this immediately rather than assuming. The content overlap between tiers is substantial in the middle grades, but Higher tier introduces topics (such as algebraic fractions, further trigonometry including sine and cosine rules, and more demanding probability and vectors) that simply don't appear on Foundation papers, and vice versa: Foundation papers spend more time on core number and basic geometry that Higher tier assumes you already know solidly. Revising the wrong tier's content in your final week is a waste of scarce time, so confirm your entry with your teacher or school if there is any doubt.
